A warm summer night,
the smell of hot bodies
permeates the air.
Fear hangs thick
Seeping it’s way into the hearts
Of the innocent.
Images of death flash through
Young minds
with thoughts of a future never
to be had.
Memories of the life already lived
Recycle into a horror picture
of their own.
Finally sleep comes.
An interlude from active thought,
But leads to a torture of
the subconscious.
A nightmare that will not end
or yield into pleasant dreams.
Death is heard with every siren
that splits apart
the relief of silence.
The sun rises from a black shroud
Illuminating the fear as
wide eyes seek refuge.
The scene has been set for this day,
yet every head is bowed in gratitude
For the light that excludes them
from eternal darkness.
